War - now and then...

Ever wondered how the whole Ramayana could have been avoided if only Hanuman had picked up Sita instead of setting Lanka on fire???

To be true, i like Ravana more than Rama.. if i have my Indian mythical history right, Ravana was an ardent devotee of Lord Siva... he got the Power, immortality and supremacy from the God Brahma himself... he got the weapons from Lord Shiva, again a God...

not that he left this country people to die out of hunger and thirst either... myth has that the country was so beautiful and prosperous that the roads were laid of gold, that there were tree orchards every where and that no traveler went thirsty or hungry... myth has that once when an ascetic asked for alms, thinking he will get gold, he got Iron pieces... in the view of abundance of gold availability, the king thought iron was more valuable... such was the prosperity...

accepted that he coveted on Sita, wife of another person... but who in this world doesn't do that now-a-days??? :-P They blame that he bought the doom over him because of his cruelty and greed... it seems he overtook all three worlds there by angering the gods... ok he took over you but i saw no Rama or Vamana appearing when Alexander the great was ruling and taking over the whole world... they didn't even give us a glance when our own Asoka, the Great almost captured the whole of India...

See.. first the Gods give Ravana the whole power.. Ravana goes uses his powers to the whole extent.. they send a woman who teases him on her Swayamvar... he gets irritated and owes to take revenge.. they send another God in the form of a mortal.. make him marry the earlier said Female... Ravana kidnaps the Female and the now-mortal-man-god sends a Monkey god to give a report of the situation... he instead sets the whole island on fire, claiming it is full of demons and demoness-es... out-breaks a war to destroy peace and threaten the whole nation...

once the war is over the now-mortal-man-god is not even happy with his wife.. he goes on to suspect her loyalty(puke..) and asks her to step into the Fire...  even after that he doesn't believe her and asks his brother to "miss" her in the forest... and he does jalsa happily in his kingdom without any female-hindrance...

Now where have i heard this story in near future??? Something about funding all the weapons, then getting insecure that they may over take and finally destroy by raising petty issues.... ring any bell??

ignoring the warnings, asingapatalum paravailla..they show hanuman to be a monkey man.. not human.. so not enough rationale and hence did what was asked..anyways war has this iterating theme about it.. and the myth also talks about ravana and a munivar(not a fake one you get these days) agasthiyar having a one on one veena competition and agasthiyar winning and ravana accpeting it with grace and humility..all contradictory..kozhapuranga pa..free

if only Sita had heeded to Lakshmana that it was fake when she heard Mareecha's cries ...

if only Lakshmana was a bit courteous to Shoorpanaka instead of giving her a nose job :) ...

so on and on and on

here are so many twists and turns in our epics and lots of branch-stories from the main line which sometimes are a very interesting read (like the one where Ravana gives iron as alms). I learnt my Ramayana and Mahabharata starting off from the Amar Chithra Kathas and it was an amazing read.

I recollect that in Kamba Ramayanam, Ravana is not made out to be demonesque.

accepted that he coveted on Sita, wife of another person... but who in this world doesn't do that now-a-days??? :-P

What Ma'am??? Courting controversy? How about the converse? ;-)

Anyway let us see how Maniratnam tweaks the story outline in his Ashoka Vanam/Raavana.

True that would have been so much wiser!!

But I won't say Ravana was very good either, taking a woman away, by force, and demanding she marries him is not right either.

I did feel bad for Sapurnkha though, she could have been treated with courtsey, instead she was humiliated, I also wonder what we mean by chopping off somebody's nose.. was it an idiom, or literal, very cruel both ways. (Cutting off somebody's nose implies humiliation)

Unknown said...

well, the story would be... sapurnkha came to laxman, asking him to marry her..he said no in the best way possible..then she went to Rama (what kinda girl is she anyways! 2 proposals in one hour, daymn!) ..and rama denied her 'offer' by saying he is married to sita..that's where she got angry and the showed the true 'rakshasa' colors, running to sita to tear her apart, which on the way, interrupted by a protective laxman, ended up with the nose on the ground.

well, i won't blame laxman on that :D
but always wondered, what if ,when hanuman burned lanka and left, the fire became a forest fire in the Ashokha forest and made a barbecue out of sita! monkeys man!!! they dnt think at all :D

nobody in our myths were great men dear.. all wr the same MCPs

and yep... it was meant as though she was humiliated...

Ratzzz said...

monkeys man!!! they dnt think at all :D

they are monkeys man.. they arent supposed to think... they just follow rules..

and two proposals in an hour!!! :P u got the order wrong there.. Ram directs her to Lax saying he is single.. but u know Lax wasnt single either.. he was just separated. these gods, they dont think either

Nice one! And I guess you did read my interview with Ravana, right? Because the dude deserved better than being burned as an effigy ever Dussera (and WTF's that about anyway?). Write on! :-)

Ratzzz said...

@ ashok..

yeah.. read ur Ravana wala interview.. i love Ravana for his devotion and his "certain" principles..

how ever godly Ram was, i still hate him...

:-) thanks for the comment...

Rajlakshmi said...

Mr Rat is surely more intelligent asking such ratinal questions :D
there are many unnswered questions related to Ramayan... and the fact that Ram made Sita to give agni pariskha really makes me wonder if he really was a man-mortal-god or whatver ... these epics are so so biased that it frustrates me to even read them..

Ratzzz said...

@ Rajlakshmi

after all it was written by a "Male", dear.. its bound to be chauvinistic, given the time period it was written...

and yeah i hate this Rama character...

-Miss. Rat :-P

Dear Mr/Ms
Fitst have some basic courtesy and aunthenticity towards what you are writing about. If you want to write your own ideas and opinions its perfectly fine but DO NOT write it in the name of RAMAYANA or any other pristine scripture.
Can you please quote from which Ramayana you are taking all the incidents which you have quoted. Though there are around 2000 versions (to my knowledge), Valmiki Ramayana is taken to be the original and authentic both in tradition and in research. Can you please quote from which part of Valmiki have you taken all the above quotes

Thank you

Can an answer be given the question raised by Anonymous on Dec 29th at 05:42 PM?

As said, please dont write anything that u like...Ravana was never a shiv bhakt...Rama's core heart never rejected Sita Devi at any point of time...Hanuman is not a monkey...Coverting other's wife is unjustifiable at any point of time, then, now...any time...

Ramayana has its own value and it has time and again proved its worth for centuries together...and to you - it will continue to prove it in future to come....
